Can a Polyethylene paddle boat be patched with a fiberglass patch?

i just bought a used paddle boat and i noticed it had a patch on it, the guy i got it from never used and didnt patch it, so he didnt know, but i looked the boat up online and found out that its made out of Polyethylene not fiberglass, but the patch on it has like a mesh matherial coted in some kind of thickish orang or red looking stuff, is this fiberglass patch or a patch for Polyethylene? will it leak or sink?
